Farscape

So, I almost forgot the real reason that I didn't do a lot of reading in February.

I FINALLY MADE IT THROUGH SEASON ONE OF FARSCAPE!!!!!!!!!

And, wow, did it grow on me.  It took me three attempts to finish the first episode, and then the next five or so were kinda meh, but when they finally started focusing on world-building (as opposed to just telling a stand-alone story per episode), I started to enjoy it.  So much so that I would watch multiple episodes in one sitting, which, for me, is pretty unusual.

I even managed to get over my dislike of Rygel-the-puppet (honestly, if it isn't Muppet Treasure Island, then the use of muppets just makes me uncomfortable).

AND.  I got used to the Australian accents.  Sort of.  Plus I figured out why those accents upset me - American or European accents are uncommon enough here to be suitably exotic, which works for scifi/fantasy-type productions.  Australian or NZ accents, on the other hand, are familiar enough that hearing them throws me out of the story.

I gotta say that Claudia Black is mighty fine, and makes Aeryn Sun my favourite character.

Yay I do love Farscape, but you're right it takes a while to get into it :) I was living in Australia at the time and so I didn't even pick up on the accents :)

I LOVE Aeryn Sun though!

I loved the first episode - the whole Other that John Crichton experiences! And I liked a couple of other S1 episodes, but generally it didn't work for me, which is kind of gutting, as Aeryn Sun is AWESOME!

it isn't just a 'human beings in space' story
What I love about the first episode is that it isn't about John coming to this strange part of the universe and immediately being the center of attention ("Ooooh, a human!!!) - instead, they don't really care about him and his wanting to get back to Earth: They have their own and bigger problems.

And the S1 episode where they get back to Earth, and the humans hear Aeryn et al. speak in alien tongues - it made such a strong impression on me; again, the Otherness of them (from the humans' POV) was so strong and well done!

I thought I was used to the Australian accents too, but last episode we watched was like Australians putting on Southern accents and it was rather disturbing. I totally get what you mean though - it's weird how something can sound odd because it sounds familiar.

I'm glad you persevered, and came to enjoy it!

I just never could catch into the show. But Claudia Black is fine. The guy, however, is that odd facial/body type that makes me go into auto-ick mode. That didn't help me. Pity, cause I normally enjoy sci-fi as a television entertainment.
